There are a lot of things going on in the Scouting world. I find that grounding myself in the reason we do what we do can be very helpful. BSAParents is a group of parents describing the virtues of Scouting and the following YouTube video shows parents talking about Scouting and their children. It inspires me to continue to do the good work of Scouting.
I hope it does the same for you.

This time of year, many parents are deciding if Scouting is right for their son or daughter. I know there are a lot of things kids can do today, but Scouting is one of the very best things for children and their families. And the safety of youth is our top priority.
Please take a look at this video from BSA Parents and see why these parents think Scouting is safe and fun for their children.
Good Scouting to you and yours.

The World scout Jamboree is here!!!
Just in case you have not heard, a most remarkable thing is happening smack dab in the middle of West Virginia and the Buckskin Council. Today is the first official day of the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. And the Buckskin Council is fully engaged.
We have 30 Scouts attending this world class event, which is many more than we usually have participate. In fact, the BSA basically gave us our own troop, which is pretty much unheard of for a council our size. And we have over a dozen leaders on staff at the World Scout Jamboree. And we have Scouts and leaders helping at Yeager airport greeting the international Scouts when they arrive. And we hosted the Guatemalan Scout at the Wehrle Scout Service Center this past weekend prior to their World Scout Jamboree experience.
Starting today, youth from around the world will have a Scouting experience like never before. No other World Scout Jamboree has offered white water rafting, mountain biking, zip lining, rock climbing, skate boarding, target shooting, scuba, and more! And each participant can communicate back home because the camp sites has 5G cell phone coverage. Just remarkable!
Follow the link below to our Facebook page. We are posting a number of pictures and stories related to the World Scout Jamboree. And check back often.

So here are a couple of our newest Scouts arriving at Camp Kootaga last Friday to participate in our 100th Anniversary Council Camporee. I would say they are ready for adventure and fun! They were joined by over 300 Scouts and leaders for a wonderful weekend of Scouting activities. A special thanks to Glenn Harrison, George Soltis, Pete Roth and Rick Atkinson and our fabulous Order of the Arrow for their hard work to deliver an exciting camporee.

We had a great time last Saturday celebrating the retirement of Robin McChristian. Robin has served 2 Boy Scout Councils the past 22 years. She says she has worked for 3 different Scout Executives which I am sure was a really big challenge lol.
Robin first started in Scouting with her son, which is how so many are introduced to Scouting. I am personally honored to know and have worked with Robin.
Here is a Facebook link with some pictures.

Sometime it seems we take a step forward, and then a step backwards. You may have heard the recent news about a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America. Below is a link with an excellent video from Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh addressing this issue. Please follow ths link to get more information about the Boy Scouts of Aemeica 's commitment to serve youth in America.

We had a great community day camp last week at the Wehrle Scout Service Center. Dozens of local youth, most who have had no prior Scouting experience, got to participate in day camp activities. To be as inclusive as possible, this camp was free for all youth. Thanks to the many great volunteers who made this camp possible. Please follow the link below to our Facebook page to see some great pictures.

I want to make a big shout out and say thanks to Council Marketing Chairman Pete Roth, our council and district marketing volunteers, and our Shooting Sports Committee Members for supporting our inflatable Daisy BB Gun Range. It has been such a great success that we have purchased a second one to use to promote Scouting. Please take a look at the YouTube link below as I explain to Bryan from "Bryan on Scouting" fame about how much success we have enjoyed using this portable range.

Hello Campers!
It is that special time of year when we get to do that special Scout thing called camp. This week I got to visit with some special friends at the Chief Cornstalk Day Camp at Coonskin Park. Check out the YouTube link below:
They look a little worn out, but it was late in the day. They continue today. We have multiple Day Camp locations throughout the Buckskin Council. Follow the link below and make sure your Cub Scout gets to camp!

Scout Friends,
There are distractions all around this week. I know if you watch or read the news you might think the Boy Scouts of America is having a bit of a hard time. Well times are challenging. Change can be difficult, but just when I wonder how things are going to turn out, I get re-inspired. Take a look at this YouTube video and tell me if this is just about the best thing in the world.
These young people don't know what we know (and worry about), and that is a good thing. They just know they are Cub Scouts and they are fishing.
I hope this brightens your day. It did mine.
Good Scouting to you and yours.

Today is Administrative Professionals Day and the Buckskin Council and I are blessed to have a wonderful support staff that is dedicated, conscientious, helpful, trustworthy, loyal, and just a bunch of fun. Here is a picture of them with Larry and I as we treated them to a thank you lunch in honor of their service to Scouting and the Buckskin Council.
If you see one of these fine ladies in the next week tell them thanks. They deserve it!

March 15, 2018Well, they’re here!!!
The Buckskin Council has registered our first girls into three Council approved Cub Scout Packs that are participating in the early adopter programs for Family Scouting. This is an exciting time for our Scouting families and I hope you will welcome them into our great Scouting program.Starting in August, all chartering partners will have the choice of offering Cub Scouting to boys and girls in the same pack, boys and girls in separate packs, boys only in a pack or girls only in a pack. These options will make it much easier for families to enjoy Scouting as a family, and will allow our chartering partners the flexibility they desire in serving families.
Look for a Family Scouting link on Buckskin.org, which offers a great visual explanation on the changes. Please take a look, and if you still have questions, call your executive or the Scout Service Center. We will do our best to answer your questions.
Exciting times!

This is Boy Scout Anniversary Week, and we are celebrating 108 years of Scouting! And we kicked off Scout Week with two awesome activities. The 49th West Virginia Outdoor Sports Show at the Charleston Civic Center had a lots of fun activities including the Buckskin Council inflatable BB gun range. Scouts were admitted for free if they wore their uniform and if they completed 6 challenges they received a patch. I understand the lines were long the shooting range, and as a last minute event we also ran the Lego pinewood derby track. Here is a FaceBook link to view:

Happy New Year 2018!
Here comes 2018 and boy I just can't wait for what is ahead for the Buckskin Council. I know with the quality of our volunteers and staff we will meet challenges and treat them as opportunities.
Soon we will provide additional information on Family Scouting. We also have three opportunities for Boy Scouts to attend a quality Summer Camp in 2018. Check it out on the Boy Scout summer camp tab. And our Family Camps are growing year after year. Don't miss out on these fun program opportunities.
Shoot me an email and let me know how your Scout unit is doing. I am looking for great Scout stories to share in 2018. You can reach me at jpurdy@bsamail.org.
Good Scouting to you and yours!

Wow!
What a time to be in Scouting. As you may have heard, the National B.S.A Executive Board has voted to allow access for girls in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. I know this big change will come with challenges and controversy, but in the long run I believe offering our Program to any youth who wants the adventure and fun of Scouting is the right thing to do. Below please follow the link for more information on Family Scouting.

Well the eclipse has come and gone. We sure had a lot of excitement here at the H. Bernard Wehrle Sr. Scout Leadership Service Center.14 Cub Scouts from Pack 135, along with 32 adults and tagalongs spent a couple hours on the deck viewing the spectacular event. They had a ball and so did the Council Staff. Here are a couple pictures.
I am looking forward to our big Fall recruitment. More to come. Good Scouting to you and yours. JLP
Welcome to the newly designed Buckskin Council Web Site! I hope you will take some time and learn where to find lots of great Scouting information. I hope to bring to this page a series of brief videos covering current topics in the Scouting world. So stay tuned.
