Scouting America depends on the leadership of its volunteers.  The Buckskin Council will honor it's volunteers,  2024 Eagle Scouts, and 2025 Silver Beaver recipients at our Volunteer Recognition Dinner.  The Eagle Scout Award is the highest award a Scout may earn.  All 2024 Eagle Scouts are invited. The Silver Beaver is the highest award that Buckskin Council may bestow on a volunteer and recognizes Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within the council.

Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate, including families.  The dinner is Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV.  The doors open at 5:15 pm and dinner begins promptly at 6:17 pm.

The cost for a meal ticket is $15 per person.  Please register online by March 5th.  If you wish to register after March 5th, you must register in person at the Council Service Center.

American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year nomination window is from November 1st to March 1st, annually. Nomination packets must be received by each applicant's respective American Legion Department (state) no later than March 1st. Then each respective American Legion Department (state) Selection Committee will determine the Eagle Scout judged to be the best in their Department (state). The Department (state) will then send that packet, along with a list of the members serving on that Selection Committee, to The American Legion National Headquarters no later than April 1st.

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three (3) runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each.

The scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarship upon enrollment to an accredited trade school, college, or university within the United States. Disbursement of the scholarship funds through an online request will be made available jointly to the student and the school. Scholarship winners must utilize the total award within four (4) years of their post high school graduation date, excluding active military duty or religious mission.

Additionally, the American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will travel to join the Youth Champion Delegation of The American Legion that is honored each August at the annual National Convention of The American Legion.

Takhonek Lodge AIA/ICE Weekend

Takhonek Lodge's AIA & ICE Workshop is March 21-23 at Camp Arrowhead.  It's your chance to learn more about Ceremonies and being an Elangomat.  We strongly recommend that anyone interested in the OA’s ceremonies come to this event. Further, we encourage others to come out and spend time with their brothers and even forge an interest in the behind-the-scenes work.

The fee is $20 per person and includes meals, an event patch and other activities.  Registration closes March 19th at 11:59 pm.

This workshop is for both youth and adults. Participants will have the opportunity to make a ceremonial craft and learning how to prepare for ceremonies.  The fee for the optional craft is $15.

Spring Product Sale

Help your Scouts earn their way to camp this summer by participating in the 2025 Spring Product Sale.  Scouts across our Council can earn their way to one or more of our summer camping opportunities in West Virginia by selling nuts from Whitley’s Peanuts and Country Meats' delicious meat sticks.  The Unit Commission is 32% for this fundraiser.

We will be sending sales packets to units that make a commitment to help their scouts by selling nuts.  Please fill out the Commitment forms and return them to us by February 1, 2025, so we can assemble your packet and your unit can begin selling on February 15, 2025

Key Dates for the sale are:

  • February 1, 2025                     Turn in Commitment forms and Show N Sell Order for Country Meats
  • February 14, 2025                   Show N Sell Order Delivery/Distribution
  • February 15, 2025                   Sale Begins
  • March 31, 2025                       Unit Nut and Meat Snack Take Orders Due to Council Service Center by Noon
  • April 11 – 12, 2025                 Distribution of Orders (depending on location)

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

What is IOLS?  The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Positions-Specific Training and Venturing Advisor Position-Specific Training, and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors.

  • IOLS is an outdoor classroom training required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to be classified as position trained. (If attending Wood Badge, IOLS is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters)
  • Gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.
  • Hands-on participation is the best learning tool, and this course models the techniques used by effective Scoutmasters, and other leaders in the Scouting program. Attendees will see and experience different aspects of how Scouting works while playing the role of Scouts in a troop.
  • Participants will leave the training experience with a full understanding of how the patrol method operates, a feeling of comfort in working with the instructing their Scouts, and an increased level of confidence taking Scouts outdoors safely.

What is covered in IOLS? .The course is designed to address a wide variety of topics such as Outdoor Ethics, Cooking, Fire Site Preparation & Building, Campfire Program, Interfaith Worship, Flag Ceremony and more.

What is the cost to attend? The course is $30.00 per person. This covers course material, cracker barrel (snacks) on Friday night, along with breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

When is IOLS training? The next course will be May 2-3, 2025 at Camp Arrowhead. Check-in begins Friday at 6:00 pm. All participants are expected to arrive by 7:00pm. The course is planned to conclude by 5:00 pm on Saturday.

What should I bring? You should bring a Scout Handbook, a sleeping bag or blankets, flashlight & batteries, personal items, a notebook and pen or pencil. You may bring your own tent or use a tent provided by the camp. Dress for the weather – the course goes on rain or shine.

Aviation Merit Badge Day

March 8, 2025 – Bill Noe Flight School, Yeager Airport, Charleston, WV

Check-in begins at 9:00 am. Merit badge session will be from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Lunch will be provided.

Session is limited to 30 scouts.

All Aviation Merit Badge Requirements will be covered by the instructors, but scouts will be expected to complete requirement 5 as a pre-requisite for the session.

Registration fee is $5.00 per scout. Adults may attend at no charge and should register as well.

Yeager Airport is located at 100 Airport Road #175, Charleston, WV. If coming via I-64, take exit 99 to WV-114/Greenbrier St. Follow WV-114/Greenbrier St to Airport Road.  Follow the signs to the flight school building.

Register early before the class fills up.
