MERIT BADGE COLLEGEWVU TECH and the COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE @ WVU TechMontgomery, West VirginiaFebruary 23, 2008 WHERE: WVU TECH – Montgomery, West Virginia REGISTRATION DEADLINE: February 18, 2008 WHY: To provide Scouts with an opportunity to complete one or two merit badges of their choice.
WHO: Boy Scouts who would like to earn a merit badge working with West Virginia University Community and Technical college faculty, business leaders and members from the community service field. All adult leaders and parents have the opportunity for training in First Aid/CPR. Scoutmaster Specific and other adult training will also be conducted at WV TECH. COST: $10 per Scout. This will cover registration and lunch. Pre-registration deadline is February 18. Registration after February 18, the cost is $12 and will be subject to the number of openings left in the class. No refunds will be given. No registration will be accepted at the door the day of the event. LUNCH: Lunch will be catered by West Virginia University Institute of Technology and is included in the youth registration fee. Adults can purchase lunch for $6.00.
UNIFORM: All Scouts MUST wear Class “A” uniform.
RESPONSIBILITY: All Scouts will travel about the campus as a group. It is absolutely necessary that Scouts remain together in their assigned areas. Scouts must remember that they are representing ALL BOY SCOUTS, their sponsoring institution, and the Buckskin Council.
NOTICE: You must work on the most recent merit badge prerequisites and work should begin NOW! Free parking is available. Morning, afternoon, and all day classes will be offered. Classes will be held in different classrooms. Scouts may choose to attend morning and afternoon classes or an all day class.
BRING: *Notebook *Blue merit badge card(s) signed by your Scoutmaster plus requirement no. and letter filled in on all blue card(s). *ALL prerequisite items for each class. *Merit badge pamphlet for each course you are taking.
READ: Pamphlets thoroughly before attending the college!
Study carefully the merit badge pamphlet(s) prior to coming to the Merit Badge College. You should know the information required of you before attending. Any requirements that instruct you to “BRING”, “COLLECT”, “WRITE”, or “DISCUSS” should be brought with you neatly prepared, typewritten and proofread for accuracy.
Please be certain that your name, address and Troop number also appears on your work. Note: Please be advised that MBC courses may need certification by a note from a parent or scoutmaster unless otherwise noted in merit badge book.

Citizenship in the Nation (Morning & Afternoon classes- Limit 20 per class)--------Instructor: Mike Cross 1. Read the merit badge book 2. Active participation in discussions is required 3. Requirement 1 – Be prepared to discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of a US citizen. 4. Requirement 2 – Bring certification/proof from a parent/guardian. 5. Requirement 3 – Bring list of national issues and be prepared to discuss issues. 6. Requirement 4 – Be prepared to discuss documents. 7. Requirement 5 – Bring list of the six functions of government and be prepared tp discuss all parts of requirement. 8. Requirement 6 – Bring written report about speech of national historical importance answering all parts of requirement and be prepared to discuss. 9. Requirement 7 – Be prepared to discuss all parts of requirement. 10. Requirement 8 – Bring a copy of the letter you’ve written to your Senator #8.
Citizenship in the World (Morning & Afternoon classes- Limit 20 per class)------Instructor: Margaret Dilley 1. Read the merit badge book 2. Be prepared to discuss requirements 2, 3, 7b and 7c.
Communications (Morning & Afternoon classes-Limit 20 per class)---------- Instructor: Debra Dangerfield 1. Bring a written report to show evidence of completion of requirement 1, 2, 7 and 8. 2. Be prepared to give your speech for requirement 3 in class. 3. Be able to deliver requirement 4 in class. 4. Bring a written report for requirement 5 (any public municipal meeting is okay). 5. Bring detailed evidence of completion for requirements 6, 7, 8 or be able to demonstrate it to the class.
First Aid (All Day class-Limit 15 per class)------------------------------------ Instructor: Richard Cumbridge 1. Bring documentation that you have current knowledge of first aid requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. ( Requirement 1) 2. Complete 2b at home and bring it with you to class, ready to discuss. 3. Be prepared to perform 3c and 7 in class. 4. Be prepared to demonstrate 3d, 4a, 4b, and 6b in class.
