As a district we strive to help volunteers of Kanawha, Braxton, Clay, Nicholas, and Webster counties. The Scouting program provides an inspiring year round indoor and outdoor program that is appropriate for all age groups. We emphasize character development, family involvement, and community involvement. We promote these values by providing exciting activities like Cub Day Camp, Fun Days, Camporees, summer camp, and high adventure opportunities. All of these programs we offer are designed to instill the values of Scouting in our youth members.

RECRUITMENT
We have had a spectacular Fall Recruitment Effort and I would like to thank all of the leaders that have helped in getting new boys involved in our program. Please continue to encourage new boys to sign up. Please send all paperwork in, or call me and I can pick it up whenever I am in your area. It is important that we get all of the new Scouts in the computer database so that they can earn awards and are registered as members. Thanks again for all of your time and dedication.

Volunteers Needed
The Elk River District is seeking active and interested participants for the District Committee! If you have expertise in a particular aria of Scouting we would like to invite you to share your ideas, input and passion with our committee. We have positions available for finance, Cub Scout and Boy Scout program, camping promotions, training, product sales, event planning, and commissioner service. Please feel free to send Jonathan Stevens an email with your aria of interest and a little bit about your scouting and professional background so that you can get involved with our district. Jonathan’s email address is jstevens@bsamail.org , or feel free to give Jonathan a call at 304-340-3663 to discuss opportunities within the District.

Boy Scout Spring Camporee
Have you ever wanted to camp on an island?  Here’s your chance!  Join us for spring camporee at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park on April 25-27! At this event Scouts will have the opportunity to work towards earning the Boy Scout Conservation Good Turn Award.  We will be working with the WV State Park Service by building a trail on the island for the park guest to enjoy for years to come.
You will definitely want to pack light for this event!  Equipment will be packed 1.5 miles from the Ferry dock to campsite.  Patrols will compete on the ranges, tomahawk throwing, and other events.  Eagle Scouts, be ready to show off the skills that you’ve learned along your scouting journey in our “Are you Tougher than an Eagle Scout?” competition.
Please mark these dates on your calendar now. Pre-Registration is required as arrangements must be made for your ferry ride on and off the island.  All registrations are due by April 7.  The cost is $12 per Scout and Adult Leader attending.  Keep an eye on our district Facebook page and buckskin.org for the Leaders Planning Guide and registration form.

For more in formation check out the links on the District Boy Scouts Events page

Commissioner Corner
It’s that time of year when many of our units are rechartering.  Recharter is the process where a Scout unit renews its charter as an official part of the Boy Scouts of America. This involves:
  • An update of your unit’s roster (including adding/subtracting members, updating contact information for individuals or your unit’s chartering organization. Don’t forget those email addresses for Voice of the Scout surveys)
  • Payment of registration fees with the national Boy Scouts of America organization (don’t forget that the fees increased to $24/Scout or Adult Leader this year)
  • Submit your complete charter registration with all signatures to the council office on-time and you will earn the easiest 25-100 point for the units Journey to Excellence.
